The Implementation phase of the ORIO Mini Hydro Power Project is officially underway following a launch ceremony that was held on 14th August 2017.
UECCC is implementing agency of the Project that entails construction of 9 mini hydropower sites and a distribution network as a single project. The Project is being funded by the ORIO Infrastructure Fund of the Royal Kingdom of the Netherlands Government and the Government of Uganda.
During the high powered event, the Grant Agreement of the Implementation Phase of the Project was exchanged between the Ambassador of the Netherlands to Uganda, H. E. Henk Jan Bakker and the Minister of Finance Planning and Economic Development (MOFPED), Hon. Matia Kasaija. Other high profile guests at the event included; the Minister of Energy and Mineral Development (MEMD), Eng. Irene Muloni, the Permanent Secretary MOFPED and UECCC Board Chairman, Mr. Keith Muhakanizi and the Permanent Secretary MEMD, Dr. Stephen Isabalija..
The goal of the Project is to contribute to the economic development and poverty alleviation of the project area through rural electrification. It is estimated that a total of 71,081 households will benefit from access to electricity as a result of the Project.
